General FAQs

How can students take Advanced Scholars courses?
In order for students to take AS courses, their high school needs to submit a New School Application and be recognized as a partnering Advanced Scholars high school. After your school agrees to partner with UNL, students may submit all required application materials in hard copy format. All Advanced Scholars courses are completed online and taught by UNL instructors. Each course is set up/designed by the instructors and may be very different from the next.

How do students enroll?
Once students have been accepted to the Advanced Scholars program, they will be e-mailed an NU ID number from the Office of Admissions to the e-mail address used on the their application. Using the NU ID and PIN number, students will log into WAM!, selecting the eNroll option on the left navigation bar.  Once in the eNroll system students will enter the four digit call # of the course they are interested in, along with the number of credit hours for the course, and click submit. Advanced Scholars course call numbers are mailed and e-mailed to students and high school contacts after acceptance into the program. Students may also contact the Advanced Scholars program for the call numbers.

What are the deadlines for registering/enrolling in AS courses?
Deadlines for the Advanced Scholars program are listed on the Academic Calendar and follow the same schedule as on-campus deadlines. It is important to note that students need to be enrolled at least one week prior to the start of classes.

When is the tuition due and how are bills received?
Once registration is received, students’ bills are generated by the 25th of each month. Tuition bills are mailed to Advanced Scholars students and are also available online via the UNL Web site, What About Me? (WAM): http://wam.unl.edu or What About My Student? (WAMS): http://wams.unl.edu. Advanced Scholars students receive e-mail notification each month their bill is available to view.
Student tuition bills are due the second week in September for the fall semester and the second week in February for the spring semester. Please check the Advanced Scholars Academic Calendar for specific dates.

Where/how do Advanced Scholars courses transfer?
If students intend to transfer credit to a college or university other than UNL, we recommend that they speak to the chosen college or university to see how UNL credit will count toward a specific degree at that school – either as general requirements or as electives. When students are ready to transfer credit earned in Advanced Scholars courses to another school, they may complete a Transcript Request form and their transcript will be sent to the identified college/university.

If students intend to use the credits here at UNL, refer to the Advanced Scholars Courses and UNL General Education Requirements to identify how the credits apply to UNL’s various colleges. As with any college credit, it is best to speak with an adviser to identify what/which college course is right for your student and their specific major/degree.

High School Administrative FAQs

How can my high school begin to offer Advanced Scholars?
Once your high school is interested in offering Advanced Scholars, please submit a New School application. In order to assist student recruitment at your high school you may use any of the recruitment resources on our website to create awareness. After we’ve received your New School Application, your high school contact person will receive e-mail and mail information regarding the Advanced Scholars program and deadlines. Visit the Partner Schools page for additional information.

Do I need to submit a New School application each year?
No, after your high school has submitted the New School Application it is not required to submit again. If there is a change at the high school or the high school contact for the Advanced Scholars program changes we would encourage the high school to submit the New School Application with the updated information. We encourage high schools to renew their agreement every 3-4 years.

How can I offer Advanced Scholars courses as high school credit? (for Nebraska high schools only)
Information specific for Nebraska high schools regarding high school credit is available on our Nebraska Page.

What is the process for students to enroll/register for their course?
Once a student has applied for admission, they will be e-mailed an NU ID number from the Office of Admissions to the e-mail address used on the student’s application. Using the NU Id and PIN number, your student will log into WAM!, selecting the eNroll option on the left navigation bar.  Once in the eNroll system students will enter the four digit call # of the course they are interested in, along with the number of credit hours for the course, and click submit. Advanced Scholars course call numbers are mailed and e-mailed to students and high school contacts after acceptance into the program. High schools may also contact the Advanced Scholars program for the call numbers. NOTE: Each semester the call numbers for the Advanced Scholars program will change.

How will I know what progress students are making in Advanced Scholars courses?
The tuition and grades signature form allows the Advanced Scholars program to provide mid-semester progress reports to partnering high schools with their participating students’ grades and/or recommendations from UNL Advanced Scholars instructors.

What if a student is struggling?
If a student is struggling or not doing well within a course, the student may want to contact the instructor of the course for recommendations, possible extensions and/or withdrawal from the course. The Advanced Scholars instructor and/or program coordinator may contact the proctor and the high school contact person to recommend withdrawal from the course so that the student’s college GPA is not affected.

What happens if I catch a student cheating?
Contact the Advanced Scholars program. As Advanced Scholars students, your high school students are considered UNL students and are expected to respect the University’s Code of Conduct and academic policies at all times, regardless of the assignment, quiz or exam. If a student is caught cheating, plagiarizing, or being academically dishonest, any action taken is up to the judgment of the course instructor.

How do students withdraw/drop an Advanced Scholars course?
Please have the student consult the UNL instructor before the drop date if the student is not sure if they are ready for UNL coursework or feel that Advanced Scholars is not for them. Partial refunds are available for courses dropped on WAM from the first through the fourth week of classes. After the fourth week, students will not receive a refund on the course.

To drop a course students will need to log into WAM, enter eNRoll, click the drop box next to your course, and click “Submit”.  Courses can only be dropped through WAM and must be dropped before 5:00pm on the identified dates listed on the academic calendar.
