Visual Literacy: Art & Design (ARCH/IDES/LARC/TXCD 143)

Today we live in a society that is bombarded by visual imagery. As our reliance on digital communication increases, we receive an ever-increasing proportion of our information visually. Unfortunately, most of us receive very little education in the form or content of objects and images. This situation may leave us feeling ineffective in our ability to decipher their more subtle messages. Visual literacy is a first step for students interested in architecture, interior design, art or textile design to challenge this situation and to begin a serious exploration of the visual world— a world that is as complex and organized as the verbal world.Visual Literacy at the University of Nebraska refers to a collection of courses cooperatively designed, taught and administered by the Colleges of Architecture, Fine and Performing Arts, and Education and Human Sciences. These courses are required of all freshman students interested in the design professions and the fine arts. This lecture course introduces students to underlying concepts vital to all of the visual professions.
