OCEANOGRAPHY (GEOL 109)
Over 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by oceans. Oceanography is the study of all aspects of the Earth’s ocean environments, including geology, geography, physics, chemistry, meteorology, astronomy, and biology. Explore the physical and chemical properties of ocean waters, as well as tides, waves, and currents. Find out how oceans affect the climate on land and how the waves erode and modify coastlines. Learn about huge submerged mountain chains that encircle the Earth, deep trenches, and some of the flattest topography on Earth. Explore how the features of the sea-floor result from processes that create and destroy the Earth’s surface layer (plate tectonics). Discover the many unusual creatures and plants that inhabit the oceans. Gain a better idea of how we are affecting the world’s oceans. Seek insight into how scientific knowledge is obtained through the scientific ocean drilling project.
