Selecting Courses

How do the Advanced Scholars courses fit into majors at UNL or at other colleges and universities? Overall, courses in the Advanced Scholars program are considered general education courses, meaning classes are likely to be taken by any college student, in any major.

The Advanced Scholars Courses and UNL General Education Requirements illustrates how courses transfer into the eight colleges at UNL.

Your high school counselor may also assist you in determining which courses would be a good fit. For advising assistance, please contact a UNL general studies advisor at (402) 472-3605. Please be sure to identify yourself as an Advanced Scholars student.

Not sure what classes interest you? Visit the UNL Power of Possibilities Web site, and find subjects that relate to UNL majors and occupations.

Transferring Credit

If you intend to transfer credit to a college or university other than UNL, we recommend that you speak to your chosen college or university to see how UNL credit will count toward a specific degree at that school. When you are ready to transfer credit earned in Advanced Scholars courses to another school, you should complete a Transcript Request form

Students attending the University of Nebraska–Lincoln will already have their earned credits on file with the University and do not need to request a transcript.

Academic Honesty

Everyone in the academic community is responsible for maintaining integrity and honesty.

Students—or in this case, scholars—are expected to respect the University’s Code of Conduct and academic policies at all times, regardless of the assignment, quiz or exam.

Grading Scale

The Advanced Scholars courses are college-level classes and course grades will be included on an official college transcript.

Only courses that use the UNL grading system are counted toward a student’s UNL grade point average (GPA). (Pass/no pass classes do not count toward college GPA).

The University uses an A through F grading system with plus/minus:

A+ = 4.0
A = 4.0
A- = 3.67
B+ = 3.33
B = 3.0
B- = 2.67
C+ = 2.33
C = 2.0
C- = 1.67
D+ = 1.33
D = 1.0
D- = 0.67
F = 0
Student Success Tips

Advanced Scholars courses are designed to be interactive, challenging and engaging. As an online student you must possess many of the same characteristics and skills as a traditional on-campus student: time management, discipline and motivation.

The following tips will help you succeed:

  • Engage: communicate with other students in your course(s) as well as your UNL professors
  • Manage your time: access and focus on your course(s) frequently or daily
  • Practice self-discipline: while enrolled in an Advanced Scholars course you are considered a college student. You are responsible for your own learning and interactions. This is a great time to “practice” the self-reliance you’ll need on campus.
  • Above all, remember there are many people at UNL to support you. Please don’t hesitate to contact us.
